Bíonn siúlach scéalach means 'travel mean broadens the mind'

This limited edition, 3-colour, Irish language screen print, from my original design is hand-pulled in Kilkenny, in Ireland's Ancient East.

It is the perfect give for the traveller in your life who always has a story to tell!

Not all Irish sayings have direct translations and this is one. If you are familiar with Gaeilge you might recognise siúl to walk and scéal is story or tale.

Celtic Symbolism

I love Celtic symbolism and the standing stones I encounter in Ireland's landscape inspire my work. The symbol in this travel screenprint, like an eye, is inspired by the stone of Mullaghmast, Co Kildare - a coronation stone for the kings of Leinster in ancient times.

The background colour is like that of textured, silver-threaded cloth and is associated with travel for me. Cloth is a basis for gifting in so many cultures.

The second colour forms a hand-drawn symbol of a compass. Meanwhile, the final illustrated lettering is my own weaving of the Irish language and symbolism, with an aquatint effect conveying an impression of stone: as permanent as the memories of the journeys we make.
